Each month, we highlight a member of the CS for All Teachers community. Here, we get to know a staff member on the CS for All Teachers project team.
Name: Jill Bowdon
Title: Senior Researcher
Work Location: Chicago, IL
Years on project: Since November 2018
Role on project: I serve as the research lead for CS for All Teachers. In my role, I support a community of researchers that works to engage teachers of CS on virtual platforms - some researchers are working with CS for All Teachers, and some researchers are working with other organizations. We use a continuous improvement approach to identify and test promising strategies for creating a virtual platform that teachers can use to build their social networks and develop professionally.
COMPUTER SCIENCE (CS) AND YOU
What have you learned working with this community? Has anything in particular surprised you?
I have been impressed with the diversity of interests in the community. Teachers of all grade levels work hard to figure out how to make computer science education engaging in their contexts. It is so inspiring to see all of the innovative practices teachers come up with to serve their students.
What do you enjoy most about working on CS for All Teachers?
Computer science education research is a relatively new field. There are so many unanswered questions, which makes my job exciting.

Outside of CS for All Teachers, what types of projects do you work on?
I work on a number of projects that utilize researcher-practitioner partnerships. In these projects, researchers and practitioners jointly develop research questions that will provide information that is locally meaningful. Researchers work closely with practitioners throughout the research process, so that the end results are useful to practitioners.
What program or app can you absolutely not live without?
How do you unwind or recharge after a long day (week, month, etc.) of work? Any hobbies, special talents, or favorite vacation spots you'd like to share?
I love spending time with my son and husband. We enjoy exploring Chicago neighborhoods, going on bike rides, and swimming in Lake Michigan.
